Westward Ho! – Where the Wind Works Wonders 🌬️🪁
If you're into kite sports, you've just struck gold. Westward Ho! is one of the UK's top spots to catch the breeze and ride it in style. At low tide, our glorious two-mile stretch of west-facing sandy beach becomes your personal playground. The prevailing south-westerly winds are ideal for kite action, but the beach performs beautifully from south-west all the way round to north winds.
And guess what? We’ve got front-row seats. Our shop window looks out over the entire beach, so we’re always keeping an eye on the conditions—and we’re nearly always here to offer advice.

Westward Ho!
Kite Smart at Westward Ho! 🪁🌬️
Westward Ho! is a cracking spot for kite sports—especially when the wind’s behaving. The beach works best in winds from the South West to North. South winds can get a bit cheeky and gusty as they barrel over the Taws, and anything with East in it is offshore… so unless you fancy a long swim to Lundy, steer clear!
Timing is everything ⏱️
Thanks to our famous pebble ridge and the 100m clear sand rule (to keep walkers and woofers safe), the beach isn’t suitable around high tide. The sweet spot for kite action is from 2–3 hours after high water, through low tide, and up to 2–3 hours before the next high water. That 100m buffer also helps avoid wind compression near the ridge—because yes, it can suck your kite skyward like a seagull chasing chips.
Burrows etiquette ⛳
No large kites on the burrows, please—they interfere with the golf course and we don’t want any airborne hazards on the 9th hole. You’re welcome to pump up your kite on the burrows grass, walk it over the ridge, and launch from the beach.
Safety first, always 🛡️
• Helmets are a must for buggies, landboards, and blokarts.
• Land kiters must give way to walkers, dog walkers, and keep well clear of children.
• Using the beach is a privilege, not a right—let’s keep it friendly and respectful.
• All kite sport participants must have third-party insurance.

Forgot Something? We've Got You Covered! 🛠️🩴🌊
While we’ve hung up our kite-repair gloves and no longer stock the big kitesurfing rigs, we do carry those lifesaving emergency spares—the ones you only realise you need once you’re already on the beach! Pumps, safety leashes, fin keys, wax… if it’s small, vital, and easy to forget, chances are we’ve got it.
