KITING

GETTING INTO
KITING

Ipads, Ipods, Laptops, IPhones, Desktops...The addictive nature of modern technology does mean a lot of people very rarely peel their eyes from a screen. Kiting is a wonderful activity practiced mainly outside in the fresh air while finding open spaces to fly. You can fly on your own, with friends or family. Kiting will get you connected with nature while using the wind to have fun.

SINGLE LINE KITES

Flying a butterfly kite on Northam Burrows near Westward Ho!

New to kite flying and want to get started? For the little ones a good quality single line kite is a perfect starting place, they fly almost on their own. Don't buy really cheap kites, they just don't fly, your new found sport would be short lived plus they also just end up in landfill! You want to be spending around the £10 mark, minium, for a quality single line kite, these last too. Find a nice open area with no obstructions or power lines, the beach or Northam Burrows is perfect for this here. Any obstructions will affect wind quality and can stop kites flying correctly. For a single line kites a perfect day will be 10-15mph, a nice gentle breeze. In these conditions parents become kite heros and kids love it.

THREE/FOUR LINE KITES

Cross kites power kites flown on the beach
Four line kites have much more control plus can generate a lot more power. Two lines steer the kite and two lines usually act as a break, on some kites they combine the break lines into one line (3 line kites) Revolution kites have pin point control plus can fly backwards while power kites concentrate on power. If you go the power kite route, at first, don't go above 3-3.5m in size. It's amazing the power they generate, even in a light breeze! Some of these kites pull enough to lift you off the ground or pull you behind a landboard or buggy. Make sure you get advise when buying, people do get injured with the wrong kite or one too advanced for them. With the right kite this aspect of kiting is exhilarating and a full body work out.

BUGGY/LANDBOARD

Once you can fly a power kite well, the next logical progression is to use nature to get you around! Landboards are big skateboards with pneumatic tyres you can ride along the sand, standing up. A buggy (in the picture) is a wind powered vehicle. Both are awesome fun and make use of your new kite skills to pull you up and down the beach. We stock the equipment for this and are alway open for any advise you may need, tips and help. If you do go this route please find a quiet spot to practise, make sure the wind is good for it, don't use a kite too big so you can stop if needed, stick a helmet on to protect the head and consider lessons.

KITESURFING

Kitesurfer on the sea at Instow

Love the sea? Why not use your new found love of kites to go Kitesurfing. This aspect of kiting is using a very large kite to pull you over the water on a twin tip board, you can do tricks with these, a surfboard to surf the waves with no paddling or even a Hydrofoil board. Kitesurfing is an amazing sport and reasonably easy to learn with many good kite schools in the UK and abroad. You really need to be taught to Kitesurf, buying the kit and having a go usually results in injury to yourself or those around you. Once mastered it's a great way to spend your leisure time.

There is no order to aspects of kiting, no better discipline to participate in. Some will believe there is but egos creep into all sports! Kiting should be about connecting to nature, being at one with the elements, finding a smile and a warm, happy feeling inside. If you accomplish this with any kite you have truly found kiting.
